Overview

This article provides step-by-step instructions to add KVM hosts to the BDRShield Backup Server by manually installing the BDRShield Delegation Service (BDS). This setup ensures seamless connectivity and allows efficient backup management for KVM hosts.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Install BDS on KVM Hosts

• Download BDRShield Delegation Service (BDS):

  • Download the appropriate BDRShield Delegation Service (BDS) version for the host OS from the backup server console.

• Run BDS Setup:

  • On the KVM host, execute the downloaded setup file and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • During installation, provide the following details:
    
    • Display Name: Enter a unique name to identify the host in the BDRShield Backup Server.
    • Backup Server DNS Name/IP Address: Enter the DNS name or IP address of the BDRShield Backup Server for registration.
      
    • Backup port: This option allows you to specify the ports used for backing up virtual machines, which are exposed via the NBD protocol. You can define ports either individually or as a range, for example, 3265, 3500-3800, 73000, or 33400-33490.
  • Complete the installation by entering all required information.

• Connection Verification:

  • After installation, the BDS agent will automatically establish a connection with the BDRShield Backup Server.
  • To confirm, go to Data Sources in the BDRShield console. The host details, including the display name, hostname/IP address, and connection status, should be visible.

2. Verifying Connection Status

• Connected Status: If the BDS on the backup host successfully connects to the BDRShield Server, the status will show as "Idle".
• Disconnected Status: If not connected, the status will appear as "BDS Not Connected". In this case:
  
  1. Confirm that the BDRShield Delegation Service is installed on the host.
  2. Ensure the BDRShield Delegation Service is running.
  3. Verify that port 32004 is open for communication between the KVM host and the BDRShield Backup Server:
     
     • Open Command Prompt and execute:
       

       telnet [BDRShield Server IP Address/DNS Name] [port]

If the KVM host does not connect to the BDRShield Backup Server, check the logs for error messages.

Common Errors and Resolutions

• Error 117073: "Unable to find the host - {Hostname/IP}"

  • Solution: Ensure the host is added under the Data Sources menu in the BDRShield console.

• Error 117074: "Unable to connect to the BDRShield Server"

  • Solution: Confirm the BDRShield Server is operational and the correct IP/DNS is specified.

• Error 117076: "BDRShield Server isn't compatible with the BDS version"

  • Solution: Make sure the BDS version on the host matches or is lower than the BDRShield Server version.

• Error 117072: "Unable to register the target host as another host with the same BIOS UUID is already added"

  • Solution: Only unique BIOS UUIDs can be added to the BDRShield Server.

• Error 117011: "Unsupported Operating System for backup"

  • Solution: Verify OS compatibility here.
