KB 117124 : Upgrading KVM and Proxmox Host Agents to Version 9.5.0

Error : Backup failed because the selected host agent build is not supported. Upgrade the agent to version 9.5.0 and try again. (Refer this KB: 117124)

Overview

This article explains how to resolve backup failures that occur when a KVM or Proxmox VE host is running an unsupported agent version.

BDRShield requires the KVM and Proxmox host agent to be running version 9.5.0 or later to perform backup operations. If the installed agent version is earlier than 9.5.0, the backup operation fails with an unsupported agent build error.

To resolve this issue, upgrade the affected host agent to version 9.5.0 or later and retry the backup.

Cause

This error occurs when the selected KVM or Proxmox VE host is running an agent version earlier than 9.5.0.

Since the installed agent does not meet the minimum supported version requirement, BDRShield cannot proceed with the backup operation.

Resolution

Upgrade the affected KVM or Proxmox VE host agent to version 9.5.0 or later by following the steps below.

Step 1: Identify the Affected Host

Log in to the BDRShield console.

Navigate to the section where KVM or Proxmox VE hosts are configured.

Identify the host associated with the failed backup job.

Check the currently installed host agent version.

Step 2:

Option 1: Automatic Agent Upgrade

BDRShield supports automatic agent upgrades. The agent checks for the latest available version every hour and automatically updates to the latest version when an update is available.

Ensure that the affected KVM or Proxmox VE host is connected to BDRShield.

The agent checks for updates every hour and automatically upgrades when a newer version is available.

Verify that the agent has been updated to version 9.5.0 or later.

Confirm that the agent service is running and the host is connected successfully.

Note: If the backup failure requires immediate resolution, proceed with the manual upgrade procedure below rather than waiting for the next automatic update check.

Option 2: Manual Agent Upgrade

Download the Compatible Agent Package

Navigate to the agent download section in BDRShield.

Select the appropriate agent package for the affected KVM or Proxmox VE host.

Download the agent package compatible with BDRShield version 9.5.0 or later.

Refer to the applicable installation guide for detailed instructions:

  • KVM: Manual Agent Installation for KVM Hosts

  • Proxmox VE: Manual Agent Installation for Proxmox VE Hosts

Step 3: Upgrade the Host Agent

Follow the documented upgrade procedure for the respective platform.

Upgrade the installed host agent to version 9.5.0 or later.

Verify that the upgrade completes successfully.

Confirm that the host agent service is running.

Repeat the procedure for each affected host, if applicable.

Step 4: Verify the Agent Upgrade

Return to the BDRShield console.

Verify that the upgraded host is connected successfully.

Confirm that the installed host agent version is 9.5.0 or later.

Step 5: Retry the Backup

Navigate to the failed backup job.

Retry the backup operation.

Verify that the backup completes successfully without the unsupported agent build error.

Step 6: Expected Result

After upgrading the KVM or Proxmox VE host agent to version 9.5.0 or later, the host meets the minimum supported agent version requirement. The backup operation should proceed without the unsupported agent build error.

Info

Important Notes

BDRShield does not support backup operations on KVM and Proxmox VE hosts running agent versions earlier than 9.5.0.

Ensure that the host agent is upgraded to version 9.5.0 or later before retrying the failed backup.

Verify both the installed agent version and host connectivity after completing the upgrade.

If the issue persists after upgrading the agent, confirm that the correct agent package was installed and that the agent service is running. If the problem continues, contact BDRShield Support bdr-support@vembu.com for further assistance.
