About NAS/File Share Backup & Recovery

BDRShield provides a comprehensive solution for protecting NAS/File shares. BDRShield ensures secure storage of NAS backup data in the BDRShield repository across local, remote, and cloud destinations with encryption and compression for optimized storage utilization. Recovery options include restoring files to their original or alternate locations. All operations are managed efficiently through a centralized console, offering detailed monitoring, reporting, and alerting for streamlined data protection.

Getting Started

Step 1: Planning

Required Components:

1. BDRShield Backup Server

2. NAS/File Share.

System Requirements(Backup Server): Windows Server 2012 R2 Core (Standard or Datacenter) & above. To learn more, refer to the System Requirements.

Step 2: Deploying Backup Server

BDRShield Backup Server is the central management component for configuring, scheduling, managing backups and recovery across virtual, physical, cloud, and SaaS environments. This server has to be installed and hosted on a dedicated machine.

After installation you can access the backup server by navigating to http://<IP Address>:6060 or http://localhost:6060 in your browser.

Configuring NAS/File Share Backup & Recovery

Step 1: Creating a Storage Repository to store the Backup data

BDRShield supports on-premise storage options and remote solutions, including DAS, NAS, SAN. You can navigate to the Infrastructure -> Backup Repository tab choose Block Storage. Refer to Block Storage Repository to learn more.

BDRShield also supports public cloud services like Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Google Cloud, and S3-compatible platforms such as Wasabi, MinIO, and Backblaze. You can navigate to the Infrastructure -> Backup Repository tab choose Object Storage. Refer to Object Storage Repository to learn more.

Step 2: Adding NAS/File Share Backup Sources

To configure backups and restores, the NAS/File Share machine must be added to the BDRShield Backup Server. Navigate to Data Source and click on Add NAS/File Share, and enter the required credentials to integrate the NAS/File Share source. To learn more, refer to the Adding NAS/File Share Backup Sources.

Step 3: Configuring & Managing NAS/File Share Backups

To configure and manage NAS/File Share backups within the BDRShield Backup Server, follow the steps to set up backup jobs, schedule them, manage retention policies, and ensure effective data protection. Navigate to the Backup -> Configure Backup -> NAS/File Share.

Configure NAS/File Share Backup

Specify a backup job name & select the backup repository
Select Share path for backup
Choose the Files/Folders you wish to backup
Configure pre/post backup scripts
Schedule when you want backups to run
Configure retention and encryption settings
Save the backup job. The backup will run as per schedule

Step 4: Recovering NAS/File Share Backups

To perform recovery operations for NAS/File Share backup jobs, follow the steps outlined. Navigate to Recovery -> Restore Backup Data and click on the Restore button alongside the respective NAS/File Share backup job you wish to restore.

NAS/File Share Recovery ( File Level Recovery)

Choose the NAS/File Share Host from which you want to restore files/flders
Select the Restore type (File Level Restore)
Select Restore Point or timestamp to restore
Specify the restore details and initiate the restore

Step 5: Managing NAS/File Share Backups

In BDRShield Backup Server, managing NAS/File Share backup jobs involves navigating to Backup -> List Backup Jobs where you can perform various actions like searching, scheduling, and editing backup jobs. You can also suspend, resume, or abort jobs, adjust schedules, and even generate job reports. For more information, refer to managing backup jobs.

Step 6: Reporting & Notification

The Reports section provides information on automatically generated reports for NAS/File Share backups in BDRShield Backup Server, including backup and recovery status, job summaries, and error logs. It also explains how notifications can be configured to keep users informed about the status of NAS/File Share backup operations and any issues that may arise. Secondary Copy for NAS/File Share Backups

Secondary Copy - Backup Copy

Backup Copy in BDRShield allows you to create another copy of your backups on a chosen target storage repository, ensuring enhanced data protection and availability for recovery.

To configure a Backup Copy, navigate to Secondary Copy -> Backup Copy -> Create New Backup Copy Job, and select the existing NAS/File Share backup job for which you want to create a copy. You can store the copy on your preferred target storage, whether block or object, and utilize it for recovery when needed. To learn more refer to Secondary Copy - Backup Copy.

Secondary Copy - Offsite Copy

Offsite Copy page provides instructions on configuring Offsite Copy/DR in BDRShield Backup Server, where backup data is replicated to a DR server in an offsite location for disaster recovery purposes. It explains how to set up offsite copy jobs for NAS/File Share backups, allowing backup data to be stored securely in a remote location, ensuring data availability and business continuity in the event of site failure. Secondary Copy - Tape Archive

Tape Archiving in BDRShield enables you to securely archive your backups to tape storage for long-term retention and compliance purposes. To configure a Tape Archive for NAS/File Share Backup, navigate to Secondary Copy -> Tape Archive -> Tape Infrastructure.
